Jekyll and Hyde–Military Medical

Military.  Solders.  Mission.  Combat.
Medical.  Patient care.  Wellness.  Health.
Blend these together, and what have you got?  Bippity-boppity-boo!
Is it even possible to combine military and medical to properly serve these two masterful giants?
I am an officer in the US military.  I am a healthcare administrator.  Every day, I must hybrid the two missions…serve both masters.  Both masters have a focus, a purpose, expectations of servitude.  One is a mission, a cause, an allegiance.  The other is a focus, a ministry, a calling.  I love my job.  I love that I work in healthcare and that I wear the uniform in service to the greatest country on earth.  It gives me an unmatched sense of purpose.  But how do I effectively serve these two masters?
It goes without saying that it is all about balance.  However, what so many people who work military medical are afraid to acknowledge is that on the military-medical pendulum, the right balance is actually a little off-center.
Think of a ballet dancer.  She moves with poise and grace.  Every movement, controlled and fluid.  Her strength is breathtakingly beautiful.  Military medical should be a similar combination of soft and strong.  Military and medical can be a magical combination.  All it takes is military’s favorite ingredient…discipline, and medical’s central focus…compassion.
