Self Care Step 6–Never Give Up On Your Dreams!

I’m not saying I am Wonder Woman.  All I’m saying is that you have never seen me and Wonder Woman in a room at the same time.

I have had many dreams of achievements I would like to realize over the years.  Some of them I have actually achieved and some of them I have serious doubts about ever achieving.  Some of the dreams I have achieved have taken a minute to wrap my head around realizing I had actually reached them!

As I type this, I am in the throes of my doctorate degree.  It is so incredible to think that it only took 8 years to reach this point, and I am now only months away from the finish line!  I can see the finish line (finally!), and I am preparing to step into the next chapter of my life as Dr Bird.  I look forward to taking my seat at the policy table where I really have a voice.  I want my voice to reflect the sentiment of those who do not have a seat at the table so I can use my powers for good as an advocate for others.

When you decide on what you aspire to and what your dreams will consist of, you must know your “why”. What is going to motivate you to keep taking steps forward (large or small) toward realizing your dream?  One small bit of advice from someone who has gotten off track at least a million times: If your motivation is centered around nothing but the achievement, you are likely to either not have enough momentum to experience success, or once you succeed in achieving your dream, you will not feel the sense of accomplishment and will be left asking yourself, “well, what now?”

I hate to sound like a downer, but a “perfect” life void of struggles and tribulations is highly overrated.  Without challenge, how are you going to grow?  Without obstacles, how will you learn (and teach others) to navigate the pitfalls of life?  Without resistance, how can you be resilient?  Maybe it sounds a bit masochistic, but perhaps we should actually be thankful for the challenges in life that make our success in realizing our dreams taste that much sweeter.
